Disc A Disc B Disc C

Disc A · Mar 24, 1990 / Oct 10-11, 2002

Broadcast: Two eras on one tape. First, NBC's Saturday Night Live, season 15 (Weekend Update dates it to Saturday March 24, 1990 — 'the first anniversary of the Exxon Valdez oil spill'; host Debra Winger, musical guest Eric Clapton): Wayne's World 'Chick Court', Weekend Update with Dennis Miller, the Calamity Jane sketch, a Senate record-labelling sketch and Clapton's performance. Then, recorded over the rest of the tape, October 10-11, 2002 cable coverage of the Iraq war resolution: a late replay of The O'Reilly Factor and Fox News Live headlines (Oct 10), MSNBC with Jessica Yellin and a Hardball replay (Ron Paul, Sen. Lincoln Chafee, Peter Bergen), Fox headlines and a Special Report replay, C-SPAN2's live Senate roll call on H.J.Res.114 around 1 am ET Oct 11, a Banfield tease, Fox headlines reporting the 77-23 Senate vote, Fox headlines (10-11-02) and The O'Reilly Factor of Oct 11 ('The sniper and the media'). Tape ends mid-segment.

Tracking: 0:30:44-1:09:43 plays back with heavy tracking noise (colour smear, rolling bands, faces often unrecognisable, worst 1:00-1:06). It starts exactly at the 1990/2002 recording boundary — a deck mismatch, not tape damage — and clears mid-shot at 1:09:43 where the tracking was adjusted by hand during transfer. Audio is clean throughout. Re-capturing that stretch with tracking set for it would likely recover the picture.

archive.org copy: the uploaded video (tape_tracking_cut.mkv) has that stretch removed — 0:30:40 to 1:09:43 of the original, 39 minutes (O'Reilly Factor of Oct 10 and the first part of Hardball) — so it runs 1:21:04 and cuts from the end of SNL straight into Hardball. Times in the program log below are for the original full-length rip; after 0:30:40 subtract 39:03 for the archive.org video. The captions and transcript on archive.org match the cut video.

Then Monday October 14, 2002: CNN NewsNight with Aaron Brown on the sniper shooting at the Home Depot in Seven Corners, Falls Church (Kathleen Koch, Patty Davis, Ed Lavandera, Montgomery County police chief Tom Manger's news conference), with the taper flipping to Fox News Alert coverage (Greta Van Susteren, Mark Fuhrman), MSNBC and CNBC.
